PlayMaker es un innovador centro educativo en Los Ángeles, y que lleva desde el 6 de septiembre de 2012 en funcionamiento. El proyecto fue diseñado y desarrollado por GameDesk Institute, una organización sin ánimo de lucro cuyo objetivo es la investigación educativa, que fue fundada por organizaciones como la Fundación Bill y Melinda Gates, Time Warner Cable o Samsung.
Los tres principios en los que se basa son: Jugar, Construir y Descubrir. Un modelo educativo que busca potenciar los intereses individuales de cada estudiante y empoderarles para que logren construir un aprendizaje significativo mediante la exploración creativa.
- Jugar: El juego es el elemento que articula el plan de estudios en PlayMaker, eliminando el miedo al fracaso. Todo se plantea de manera lúdica, como una aventura, un reto que superar.
- Construir: Los estudiantes construyen, deconstruyen y reinventan una amplia gama de dispositivos, juegos e invenciones, aprendiendo a dar solución a diferentes necesidades o problemas.
- Descubrir: En vez de leer definiciones y respuestas de un libro, se anima a los estudiantes a formar conexiones profundas con conceptos complejos a través de descubrimiento, dándoles los materiales para que encuentren las respuestas por sí mismos.
Espacios diferentes para un aprendizaje diferente
Como es habitual en este tipo de centros innovadores, la forma en que se organiza el espacio también es diferente a la de la mayoría de escuelas. El edificio cuenta, por ejemplo, con el Maker Space, un espacio donde las mesas promueven la colaboración entre pares y donde los alumnos pueden moverse fácilmente por el aula.
O Adventure Room, que abrió sus puertas en abril de 2013, y cuenta con 4 pantallas de plasma, un sistema de captura de movimiento y proyección en el suelo, una tecnología pensada para el aprendizaje móvil y basado en el juego.
